How to Use the Will County Inmate Inquiry
The Will County Sheriff's Office runs a public Inmate Inquiry portal that lists every person booked into local custody. The portal is powered by the Tyler / New World jail records system. It is open to the public and free to use. No login is needed. Results refresh as bookings, releases, and transfers happen.
The official entry point for a Will County jail roster search is the public inquiry page on the Sheriff's server. Open the inquiry portal, fill in any one field, then run the search. Use a wide search first, then narrow.
- Open the public inmate inquiry at the Will County Tyler / New World inmate portal. Some browsers warn about the certificate because the page is hosted on a numeric IP address; the Sheriff's site links to it as the official roster.
- Enter a Name, a Subject Number, or a Booking Number. Last name alone is fine for a broad search. Booking number is the most exact way to pull one record.
- Set the In Custody filter. The checkbox is on by default, which limits results to people still in jail. Uncheck it to include people who have been released.
- Use the Booking From Date and Booking To Date fields if you want a window. Both fields take a normal date input.
- Pick a Housing Facility from the dropdown if you want only one location. Choices include WILL COUNTY and WILL COUNTY ADULT DETENTION FACILITY.
- Click Search. The Clear button resets the form if you need to start over.
- Click any name in the result list to open the full inmate detail page with booking history, bond, charges, and court date.
For a closer look at the live page, the Sheriff's Tyler / New World portal is shown below. Open the Will County public inmate inquiry to run a real search.
The screen capture shows the form fields, the In Custody checkbox, and the facility dropdown that drive the Will County inmate records search.
Will County Inmate Search Fields
The Will County inmate search form is short, but each field changes the result set in a clear way. Name and booking number do most of the work. The date and facility filters help when a name is common or when the search returns too many hits. The full field inventory below maps the live portal one-to-one.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name | Text | Optional | Search by inmate name. Last name alone is allowed. |
| Subject Number | Text | Optional | The person's master Sheriff identifier across bookings. |
| Booking Number | Text | Optional | Unique per booking. Example format: 2024-00004571. |
| In Custody | Checkbox | Optional | Defaults to checked. Uncheck to include released inmates. |
| Booking From Date | Date | Optional | HTML date input. Sets the start of the booking window. |
| Booking To Date | Date | Optional | HTML date input. Sets the end of the booking window. |
| Housing Facility | Dropdown | Optional | Options: blank, WILL COUNTY, WILL COUNTY ADULT DETENTION FACILITY. |
| Search | Submit button | N/A | Runs the query against the live jail records system. |
| Clear | Submit button | N/A | Resets all fields to default. |
Note: A booking number is the cleanest way to pull a Will County inmate record because it points at one event, not a person history.
How to Read Search Results
The Will County inmate roster returns a flat list. Each row is one person, not one booking. The columns are short on purpose, so the reader can scan a long page fast and click into a name for the full file. By default the page shows the first 100 records and reports the total match count at the top of the list.
| Column | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | Links to the full inmate detail page. |
| In Custody | Yes if the person is still held; blank if released. |
| Race | Roster value. Examples include BLACK, WHITE, HISPANIC. |
| Gender | MALE or FEMALE. |
| Height | Feet and inches. |
| Weight | Pounds. |
| Multiple Bookings | Yes if the person has more than one booking on file. |
At inspection time the default in-custody search showed "Showing 1 to 100 of 511," which is a live snapshot, not a daily average. Will County jail population data changes hour by hour. For wider population context, see the Will County jail population page.
Inmate Detail Page Field Guide

Some items the public might expect are not shown. The portal does not display a mugshot, a date of birth, a holding pod, a magistrate, a warrant number, or medical flags. To see a sample live record, visit the inmate detail page on the Sheriff's server.

The sample shows the booking header, the bond and bail totals, the court date, and the full charge list with docket numbers that link each charge back to the Will County Circuit Court file.
Will County Adult Detention Facility
The Adult Detention Facility, or ADF, is the main county jail. It is run by the Will County Sheriff, Mike Kelley, and houses people who are booked into local custody for new charges, those waiting for court, and those serving short county sentences. The ADF is the single facility that feeds the Will County inmate inquiry roster. For an overview of the corrections division, see the Sheriff's official page.
The Sheriff's Adult Detention Facility information page explains the corrections division's role, lists key contacts, and links to bail and commissary tools.
The page is the right starting point when family, friends, or attorneys need to confirm an inmate is held at the ADF and how to reach the corrections division.

Capacity numbers for the ADF were not located in the official Sheriff or county pages reviewed for this content. RESEARCH GAP: no official current capacity figure has been published in the fetched sources, so a number is not stated here. Use the inmate inquiry roster for a live in-custody count.
The Sheriff's site also publishes a friends and family page with mail, phone, money, and visitation guidance in one place. Open the Will County jail friends and family page for the corrections division's one-stop guide.
This page is the right read for anyone new to the jail process because it bundles the rules that visitors most often ask the corrections staff about.
Booking Process and First Appearance
When a person is arrested in Will County, the arresting agency brings them to the ADF for booking. Booking creates the master record that drives every later screen on the inmate inquiry portal. The Sheriff assigns a subject number that follows the person across bookings, then a fresh booking number for the current event. Charges, bond, court date, and housing assignment are linked to that booking number. Once booking is finished, the new record shows up on the public roster.
First appearance happens fast. Local court rules send qualifying in-custody arrestees to court for a bond hearing. Holiday Court runs on Saturdays and on holidays at 9:00 a.m. and is limited to bail, emergency orders of protection, Saturday weddings, and emergency injunctive relief. Local rules require the Sheriff and local police to bring qualifying in-custody arrestees to Holiday Court when court is not in regular session. Video arraignment equipment is used when the person stays at the jail and the judge sits in the courthouse.
Bond status and the next court date appear on the inmate detail page right after the hearing is entered into the system. For the underlying criminal case file, use the Will County criminal records page or the Circuit Clerk's case lookup with the docket number from the inmate page.
Note: An inmate who has been to court but is still listed as in custody is normally waiting on bond, a transfer, or a sentencing date set on the case file.
Will County Inmate Visitation
Visitation at the ADF is managed through Smart Communications, the same vendor the Sheriff uses for inmate calls and mail. The Sheriff's corrections menu lists a Visitation Information page, a Mail Regulations page, and a Smart Communications inmate calls page, all linked from the corrections homepage. Visitors should confirm the current rules on the Sheriff site before they drive to Joliet, because hours, vendor accounts, and ID rules change as the corrections division updates its policies.
The current public visitation schedule was not successfully extracted from the official Sheriff pages reviewed for this content. The values in the table below are marked as research gaps and should not be treated as live hours. Confirm each row by calling the ADF or by reading the live Visitation Information page before you arrive.
| Visit Type | Schedule | Requirements | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public / family visitation | RESEARCH GAP: current official schedule not extracted | Government ID likely required; verify on Sheriff visitation page | Do not rely on third-party visitation pages. |
| Attorney / professional visits | RESEARCH GAP: current schedule not extracted | Attorney or professional credentials | Older county notice required an appointment. |
| Video visitation | RESEARCH GAP: current vendor or schedule not extracted | Vendor account likely required | Smart Communications is used for calls and mail; verify video provider. |
A COVID-era county notice listed 815-774-7950 as the phone line for attorney and professional visit scheduling at the ADF. That number is shown here as a historical lead, not a confirmed current line. Verify on the Sheriff's current visitation page or call the ADF main number before relying on it.
Inmate Mail Rules
Postal mail to people held at the ADF is processed through Smart Communications under a MailGuard notice posted by the Sheriff. Under that process, letters and cards are sent to the vendor's address, scanned, and then delivered to the inmate as a scanned image, not as the original paper. Legal mail from courts and attorneys is handled on a separate path so privilege is kept.
To send mail, address the envelope with the inmate's full legal name and the booking or subject number from the Will County inmate inquiry. A missing booking number is the most common reason mail bounces back. Books, photos, and money are handled by separate rules. The Sheriff's mail page lists the current accepted formats, banned items, and the exact mailing address used by the vendor.
The bail and commissary page is the right read for money rules. Open the Will County jail bail and commissary page for the current vendor and deposit rules.
The page bundles bail payment instructions with the commissary rules so visitors can act on both in one stop.
Inmate Phone Calls and Commissary
Inmate phone calls and the inmate side of the messaging system are handled by Smart Communications and its SmartJailMail product. Friends and family set up a vendor account at smartinmate.com or smartjailmail.com, then add funds for calls or messages. The Sheriff site links both services from the corrections menu.
Commissary lets people in custody buy snacks, drinks, hygiene items, and basic supplies from the jail. Deposits to a commissary account are handled by the vendor the Sheriff lists on the bail-commissary page. A COVID-era notice on the county site pointed to JailATM, so the current vendor name and deposit caps should be confirmed before sending money.
Bail can be posted on the same page. Court records and inmate detail pages may show bond and bail amounts, but the method, location, and hours for posting bail should be checked on the Sheriff page before a family member drives to Joliet.
Victim release alerts are run by VINELink, which the Sheriff links from its own VINE information page. Open the Will County Sheriff VINE page for victim notification details.
VINE is the safest way to learn about a release before it happens, because the alert is sent by phone and email when custody status changes.
For inmate contact help by phone or in person, the Sheriff lists a dedicated ADF contact page. Use the Will County ADF contact page for direct corrections division phone and email options.
The contact page is the one to use when the public inmate inquiry does not return the record a caller expected.
When to Search IDOC or BOP Instead
The Will County jail roster only covers local custody. If a person has been sentenced to state prison or transferred to federal custody, they will not show up in the Sheriff's inmate inquiry. Use the right state or federal tool for those cases.
Illinois state prisoners are searched through the Illinois Department of Corrections individual in custody lookup. Open the IDOC inmate search to look up by last name or IDOC number. The state system is the right tool once a Will County case has moved past sentencing and the person has been transferred from the ADF.
Federal inmates are searched through the Bureau of Prisons. Open the federal BOP inmate locator to search by BOP register number or by name. The BOP database covers people held in federal facilities for federal charges, which the county jail does not host as a primary holding role.
The BOP locator is the right next step when a person is no longer on the Will County roster and a federal case is known.
For automated alerts when custody status changes, register with VINELink. Open VINELink to set up a free notification by phone, email, or text. The tool covers Illinois state and county custody changes and is the same service the Sheriff links from the corrections menu.
VINELink sends a custody alert at booking, transfer, court event, and release, so a victim or family member does not have to keep checking the public roster by hand.
Note: A person who is no longer on the local roster is most often released on bond, transferred to IDOC after sentencing, or moved to a different county or federal facility.
